From the Cuban missile crisis to the war in Ukraine. On the 60th anniversary of John XXIII's encyclical Pacem in Terris (1963-2023)

Abstract
On 11 April 2023 we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Pope John XXIII's encyclical Pacem in Terris (1963), which had been drafted six months earlier in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, in which the pope had served as mediator between the United States and the Soviet Union. In it, the pope expresses his concern about the fragility of the international system and calls for a world authority oriented towards the universal common good. In the current context of international geopolitical instability due to the war in Ukraine (not to mention the Israeli invasion of Gaza), John XXIII's reflections on what is needed to achieve world peace are prophetic. A democratic world governance for the common good requires a universal and global ethic, something that Adela Cortina and Hans Küng contribute in their respective works.
