Central America and the association agreement with the European Union, a look at how to take advantage of the agreement in the trade of goods
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article aims to contribute to the diagnosis of the use of the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union, based on an analysis of the imports of goods from each of the Central American countries into European markets. The results reveal some gaps that the Central American countries must overcome to improve their use of the agreement as, since its entry into force, about 71% of all products imported from Central America enjoy tariff preferences, and less than half of these have a high monetary value. For some Central American countries, less than 28% of the value exported to the European Union is subject to tariff preferences. The development of a regional strategy in Central America to align the Central American export supply with the demand of the European markets is considered opportune as a means to maximize the benefits of the agreement.
