Review of proposals for the development of Latin America and the Caribbean

Abstract
This article reviews the development of Latin America and the Caribbean over the last 70 years, based on the experience and proposals made by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. It analyses the centre-periphery relationship and the proposal of import substitution industrialisation, the crisis of this proposal and the subsequent model based on open regionalism. The 2008 crisis seems to be a turning point for open trade as a development model, and a period of search opens up with an emphasis on sustainability and equality.
