Abstract

The twenty–eight Society of Jesus Universities and Higher Education Centres in the United States held a conference on “The pledge for justice in the Society’s higher education” from 5th to 8th October 2000, at the University of Santa Clara (California), to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 4th Decree of the General Congregation of the Society of Jesus, and to reflect on the impact on the University apostolate of the Society in the United States. The 420 delegates, including many high ranking directors, adopted the Father General’s speech as the basis on which to plan education for justice in every university centre. Kolvenbach comments firstly on what faith and justice have meant for the Jesuits since 1975; going on to refer to present circumstances and the way this pledge can be carried out in university education in the Society’s centres.
