The dilemma of balancing one’s private and professional life: a human resources point of view
Main Article Content
Abstract
Combining one’s personal and professional life is one of the most frequent subjects in labour relations in this new decade. Although it seems obvious that there is a need to find a point of balance between both sides, conditions today force the balance to come down in favour of the professional part. Compulsive dedication to the job, which is becoming more and more wide–spread, is an evident symptom of the extent of the problem. The consequences of this imbalance are devastating both for the worker and for his or her family: stress, professional exhaustion and karoshi, or death brought on by too much work. In the midst of this bleak panorama, a few legal measures can be found that favour conciliation, at the same time as innovative actions on the part of leading companies who are aware of the importance of balance for good organisational practice.
