Abstract

The recent election of Lula, a historic leftwing activist, as president of Brazil is undoubtedly an important issue in the history of that huge South American country. This article analyses the precedents of Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s government, Luiz Inacio da Silva’s life, the hopes and expectations aroused in the population and the challenges and difficulties that the new president will have to face throughout his political mandate.
