Abstract

The treatment given to the teaching of religion at school under the Quality in Education Organic Law (LODE) is analysed from the point of view of the Constitution. It covers two dimensions: internal (argumention–educational coherence) and external (political convenience of the project). It takes into account the Constitutional principles pertaining to comprehensive (all–embracing) education and educational plurality. From the point of view of comprehensive education, it discusses the need for the Government to define its position on whether the subject of Society, Culture and Religion is necessary in order to cover the educational objectives of the LODE. Secondly, it argues the necessity for a political pact on this question, so that the legal framework may enjoy stability and not be subject to party changes in government.
