Abstract

We describe the important changes that the Spanish financial system has undergone throughout a long period of time, in which a structural change has taken place without precedents in the past. The analysis by commercial banks, and rural and savings banks, indicates a process of liberalisation and parity with advanced countries. The lessening of importance on the part of state–owned banks has also been detected: the ICO group and Bank of Spain, although for different reasons. This alteration is immersed in a deep variation of the financial situation of economic sectors, especially to do with Public Administration and non–financial concerns. At the same time a comment is included on the risks of this process that has frequently led to problems and even to notorious scandals, whose correction has begun to take place in the last few years.
