Information Society, Communication Society?: food for thought
Main Article Content
Abstract
To what point is our society well informed? The editorial of this number begins by summarising the ideas that some years ago the Editorial Board offered on a similar subject. We go on to give some criteria of an ethical nature for evaluating the role of the media in advanced societies. Then follows a concise description of the situation of the media’s offer and demand (or consumption), as well as a brief analysis of ten general tendencies observed in the world of the media today. From these criteria and tendencies certain consequences can be deduced with respect to the questioned role of the media as a vehicle of communication and opinion. The article ends with a claim for reading as the most appropriate means of reaching informed and educated citizens.
