Abstract

Not always but very frequently, the elderly live a situation of dependence that requires specialised and expensive treatment. That raises the question of how the implied costs can be financed. This paper analyses the problems implied by such dependence, as well as the solutions through diverse formulae of dependence insurance that have been offered by some European countries. The author believes that everything seems to indicate that our country will opt for a mixed model (public–private), inspired in the German model, with an important services portfolio rendered through the Social Security and that will be complemented by private insurance, which would enjoy important tax deductions.
