Monsigor Romero’s legacy

Abstract

In memory of Oscar Romero, Father Sorge recalls his ecclesiastic profile, and his personal development, brought about by his proximity to the suffering Salvadorian people, rather than the simplifying epithets of “conservative” or “progressive”. His so–called “conversion” was no more than a coherent response to the appeals from the Second Vatican Council. It is precisely in this context that his pastoral legacy should be interpreted, characterised by a balanced conception of positive contributions from the Liberation Theology.
