Economy and Ethics

Abstract

As commemorative reference we are reproducing the paper written by Professor Perpiñá that appeared as the first article in the first number of RFS, 60 years ago. This article dealt with a subject described then as highly topical. It is astonishing to verify that it still is. Using an analytical sociological approach, the author distinguishes three main ways of acting in social life: the first one is characterised by the use of force in social relationships; the second one is based on generosity and philanthropy; the third one, the balance between the two previous ways, would be based on exchange relationships, known as business and understood as “the exchange of mercies”. The three of them are economic ways of acting, but ethics is absent in the first and the second one can not be compulsory for the average mortal. It is in the practice of exchange based on the principle of trade where “the economic life gets closer to the postulates of the healthy economy”.
