Flexibility at work and vital precariousness: the challenge of social cohesion

Abstract

The author bases the paper on the crisis of the welfare state that has lead to a situation of insecurity. He recalls the assumptions upon which the net of social security was built: access to full employment, reduction of marginal precariousness, social altruism and family solidarity. The incapacity of advanced industrial societies to offer stable employment is highlighted. The case of the United States shows the proliferation of “the poor with a job” because today’s society cannot guarantee a regular job. A series of interviews with several workers show “the rise in vulnerability”. He insists on the pressure suffered by democratic regimes from global capitalism linked to conservative reorganization. Finally, he suggests a policy based on broadening the concept of work and guaranteeing the economic basis of citizenship.
