Abstract

The content of this text refers to ethics in public life. In order to define “public life”, its boundaries with “private life” are marked; an overlapping of boundaries is detected as interrelation between them exists due to historical and intercultural reasons. In this sense, different spaces are analysed: 1) private in privacy; 2) physical public; 3) private of civil sector; 4) institutionalised public–political; and 5) social. The agents that intervene in public space are identified. The article distinguishes: professional agents (politicians and civil servants) and media professionals. Then the objectives and ethical referents that should be taken into account by public life agents are presented: collaboration of these agents with integrating common good, civic ethics, necessity of guaranteeing the appropriate running of democratic proceedings; promotion of “policy of principles”; responsibility of politicians; and as regards to civil servants, citizens’ right to a good administration. It rejects “immediatism” in agents’ behaviour, although these are logically influenced by electoral periods.
