Abstract

In the European Union today, a great deal of progress is being made in achieving the total integration of the handicapped and eliminating all types of discrimination, as well as in the elaboration of norms, especially with respect to the disabled, in the last few decades,. However, in order to better understand the current situation, it is necessary to review the development of the norms that have been established in this area. In this respect, the policies that the community institutions set out in order to establish the total integration of the handicapped encompass different areas – health, education, training, accessibility, employment, and so on – according to the interdisciplinary aspects that these initiatives involve. As all of these different aspects cannot be dealt with here in great enough depth, this study will explain how the handicapped are integrated into the labor market within the framework of European Social Policy.
