Abstract
En la audiencia general el miércoles 22 de noviembre pasado Benedicto XVI subrayaba que su visita al Reino Unido de la semana anterior (16–19 de ese mes) había tenido un doble carácter: Se ha tratado de una visita con carácter oficial y, al mismo tiempo, una verdadera peregrinación a una tierra rica en fe y cultura. El primero de estos dos rasgos no se debe pasar por alto: era la primera visita oficial de un Papa al Reino Unido después de siglos de distanciamiento entre la Santa Sede e Inglaterra por razones de carácter religioso. Fue en 1535 cuando Enrique VIII se separó de la Iglesia católica estableciendo la confesión anglicana. Hasta el 16 de enero de 1982 no se restablecieron las relaciones diplomáticas plenas entre la Santa Sede y el Reino Unido. En mayo y junio de ese mismo año Juan Pablo II realizó ya una visita a este país, pero de carácter estrictamente pastoral todavía. En esta ocasión ha sido la reina Isabel II la que ha invitado oficialmente a Benedicto XVI a visitar el Reino Unido. No se puede, por tanto, ignorar la novedad de este viaje ni minusvalorar su sentido.
