The crisis of the freedom: to re-learn to be free
Main Article Content
Abstract
Two conceptions of liberty, at least, have been under discussion in the last 60 years: negative freedom and positive freedom. Both conceptions were in conflict until recently. In. the last part of the Twentieth Century –with the fall of the Wall– it seemed that the first had triumphed over the second. In what follows, we wish to reflect on these two concepts from Isaiah Berlin’s perspective. In a second moment, and taken some of Paul Krugman’s ideas, we will try to show how and interpretation of negative freedom could have some responsibility in today’s crisis. Finally, we will outline, using some of Taylor’s ideas on positive freedom, the way positive freedom can be an aid in the construction of a more integrated, responsible and solidary society.
