Abstract

The author analyses the political, cultural, religious and socio-economic situation in Algeria, framing the reality of its small Catholic community. At the time of independence, the exodus of most of the Christian community was a great trial. Faced with the new situation, the Church in Algeria was faced with a big question: to stay or to leave. Each priest, each community of religious men and women, and each committed Christian also considered this question on a personal level. Some priests, religious men and women, and laypeople left, but many remained. The Church made a decisive decision to stay.
