Abstract

In early 1996, a book by an exegete and a journalist appeared in London: The Jesus Papyrus, the most sensational testimony on the origin of the Gospels since the Dead Sea Scrolls discoveries. The work argued that a papyrus containing part of the Gospel of Matthew, normally dated to the end of the second century, actually belonged to the year 50 AD. The author analyses the impact this book has had on specialist critics and sets out the various arguments put forward for and against this thesis.
