Membership in the Church and the necessity of the Church for salvation according to the Second Vatican Council

Abstract

The author of this article, a long-time missionary in Japan and professor at Sophia University in Tokyo, is particularly sensitive to the effect this has on non-Christians. Of Japan's 120 million inhabitants, Christian churches, taken together, reach barely half a million believers. Speaking of the Church as the ‘universal sacrament of salvation’ is much more intelligible and hopeful than the old formula ‘outside the Church there is no salvation,’ which requires historical and theological interpretation and, if applied to individuals, as has sometimes been done, would lead us into error and contradict the current teaching of the Church.
