Psychoanalysis and religion

Abstract

Religious experience has undergone a profound revision since it has been contrasted with disciplines whose methodologies and presuppositions are far removed from theology. A particularly important interlocutor, without doubt, is depth psychology or psychoanalysis. López Sánchez, professor at the San Pablo CEU University (Madrid), systematises the points of conflict that have been part of the long confrontation between the religious and the psychoanalytical interpretation of religion. Accepting the corrective effect of psychoanalytical suspicion, religious experience maintains, in spite of everything, its own genuine space, which ultimately frees it from all reductionism.
