Art in the Service of Faith Reflections on the Centenary of Alonso Cano

Abstract

The study of art limited to the conjunction of form and colour has been superseded by new methodologies which, starting from the forms, attempt to reach the intrinsic contents or concepts in each of the artistic creations of the different cultures. This is what Professor Martínez Medina tries to do when he extracts the implicit theology of the seven monumental paintings by Alonso Cano dedicated to the Life of the Virgin and located in the Main Chapel of the Cathedral of Granada. The recent commemoration of the 4th centenary of the birth of the Granada artist has served as a backdrop for this study.
