Abstract

Informed consent could be defined as the constant and gradual process by which the physician enables the patient, with due information, to submit to or refuse certain diagnostic or therapeutic procedures in accordance with his or her own wishes. If we accept the dignity and autonomy of the individual to direct his or her life and give a project to his or her existence, we must also recognise his or her right to intervene in the problems that concern his or her health. How can this possibility be ethically assessed? Under what conditions would it be plausible to provide the patient with access to information about his or her own diagnosis and treatment? This article looks at a problem that is having increasing social repercussions and attempts to inspire criteria for action.
