Abstract

The subject of myth is a source of unease for the modern religious man. On the one hand, the various rational critiques of religion are urging him to demythologise the contents of his faith and the expressions of his attitude as a condition of survival. On the other hand, modern myth studies are uncovering for him the relation of mythical themes to the most radical human questions and the answers that religion provides for them. In this situation, he fears that the demythologisation that his condition as a modern man seems to impose on him will place him in a vacuum in which the religoid life will eventually be extinguished; but he also fears that the acceptance of myth will exclude him from the world and the age to which he belongs. The reflections that follow are born out of this situation of unease and are intended to show the possibility of a response.
