Abstract

Liturgical formation has a formal aspect, which is the learning of the rites, words and gestures that constitute it. In fact, it is essentially a practice, an action. But it also has a doctrinal aspect which comes from the significance of the actions performed. It is this significance of liturgical actions that constitutes the object of patristic mystagogy, which is a particular field of catechesis. The development of this field, particularly in the 4th century, is due to the importance of adult baptism at that time. Today, however, we are faced with the need to restore to this liturgical-doctrinal formation a place which it had lost. And this presupposes first of all a reflection on the principles on which it is based.
