Reflections on evangelical counsels

Abstract

The evangelical counsels, like the whole of consecrated life, are in need of deep reflection. The traditional explanatory paradigm of advice is problematic to the extent that it seems to imply a renunciation of desires, which is based on the traditional conception of God and the human person. The author proposes a solution based on the renewed conception of God as Trinity and the understanding of the human being as "self-presence-in-relationship." The new meaning of the evangelical counsels is part of a new appreciation of the community, as opposed to a primarily individual conception, something that makes it possible for religious life to become what it claims to be: a sign of the reign of God.
