Charles Darwin in Granada The science-religion debate in 1872
Main Article Content
Abstract
On occasion of the second centenary of the birth of Charles Darwin, the author presents a debate, which took place in Granada in 1871. The subject matter is Science and Religion. The debate starts that year the Director of the Institute, Mr Rafael García Alvarez, gave the opening lecture glossing the figure of Charles Darwin and defending the Darwinism ideas. The speech was poorly received in the ecclesiastical circles then influenced by the recent declaration of the Syllabus and by the Decrees of the First Vatican Council. They censured and condemned publicly the speech as insulting and heretic. Some years later, in 1883, the same speaker Mr. García Alvarez not engaging in controversy, published a paper Estudio sobre el transformismo in which he declared the compatibility between Science and Religion.
