Abstract

Creation of a bacterial cell controlled by a chemically synthesized genome has been reported by Venter et al. as a proof for producing artificial life based on computer-designed genome sequences. However, it is important to stress that there is still a large technological gap between what has been achieved to date and actually creating life. In this work, we try to answer what is life or what is creation. There is a serious danger that synthesis of minimal genomes will be presented by scientists or perceived by the public as proving that life is reducible to or nothing more than DNA. Reducing life to genes has profound implications for several critical societal debates. On the other hand, we try to diferentiate between the “creatio ex nihilo” and the “creatio continua” as an intent to study the role of God and the man in these subjects. According to the present meaning of scientific research, the sentence “playing God” would be substituted by “collaborating God in the creatio”.
