Chinese National Identities: Historical Perspective and Current Challenges
Main Article Content
Abstract
The question of Chinese identity is a problem that has always remained latent in the history of sinology. The distinction between the Greater China and China as such has been one of the classical distinctions that served to set the limits of the dispute. Since the beginning of modern China, both Chinese intellectuals and the Nationalist and Communist Party have pursued this dispute in an attempt to resolve the problem of national unity within a framework of ethnic plurality. Throughout this article we will see how does the problem arise, how was it raised by both political factions, and how has it been addressed until today.
