Abstract

Yuval N. Harari's theses on human freedom are a challenge to a mature construction of religious faith. His theses are present repeatedly and dispersed by his different writings, and he has been making them explicit and concretized in more recent writings and interviews. On the one hand, it makes us see that our decisions are increasingly controlled and monitored, being able to totally manipulate our freedom, given the knowledge we are achieving about the functioning of our brains. This leads him to conclude that our freedom is almost a mythical story, a selfdeception, built by humanism. But it does not hesitate, on the other hand, to alert us to the need to react to these dangers, making a call to our ethical responsibility. Isn't this contradictory? Can we maintain a flirtation with determinism and at the same time appeal to ethical responsibility?
