The Social Market Economy in Christian Social Thought
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Jesuit Oswald von Nell-Breuning (1890-1991) was one of the thinkers who contributed to the origin of the Social Market Economy system in Germany based on a Marktliche Wirtschaftsordnung. This study analyzes Nell-Breuning's contribution to social justice and workers' rights in the period from 1948 to 1965, the founding stage of the German Federal Republic. The study makes use of texts that, until now, have been difficult to access: the minutes of the scientific advisory council of the Ministry of Economy, in which Nell-Breuning participated. For a correct understanding of the scope of his proposal, we will dwell on the context in which he was born and in the biographical approach to this author who is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant innovators in Christian Social Thought of the 20th century. Both aspects, context and biography, allow us to understand the originality and scope of a proposal that we could summarize in the expression “property as a right of all”.
